Our New Grand Rapids Home: Getting Prepared

My wife and I are going through the process of buying a new home! Over the next couple of months, I will walk you through the process as my wife Amy and I purchase our new house. We know that it is a buyer’s market right now, so we thought it would be a great time for us to buy a new house. We realized that we may loose on the current home that we are in, but that ultimately we will gain on the new house what we lost on the old.

We knew we were willing to do a lot of work to a house if it needed it. We wanted to look at some foreclosures and as with all foreclosures, we had to make sure that we would be ready and prepared to make a clean offer to the bank. The bank just wants to get the property sold in the quickest amount of time with the least amount of hassle.

So what did we do to prepare?

  1. We were keeping an eye on the market and researched what type of house we were looking for.
  2. We went online and filled out an application online to start the process of figuring out what loan options we have and what we could afford.
  3. We kept an eye out on houses in the price range and areas that we were interest in. For us this included the North side by Riverside Park and Alger Heights. We went to go look at a couple of different houses. Some of them were more work than what we wanted and others we knew would be out of our price range by the time we made the repairs that we would want.

These steps allowed us to be ready to make an offer right away when we found the right home.

So, where did the Alger Heights Neighborhood get its name?

I always wondered where the Alger Heights Neighborhood in the South East Side Grand Rapids, Michigan got its name.

So, I did some research and realized that it was named after Russell Alexander Alger.  Russell Alexander Alger was a Governor of Michigan from 1885 to 1887 and also served Michigan as a US Senator. I have talked about Alger Heights as being a great place to raise a family in other posts and guess what!? Alger raised 12 kids there! That’s a lot of kids.

I wonder what home was his and does it still stand to this day? If anyone knows please let me know.

I love the rich history of neighborhoods in Grand Rapids. It’s great to be a part of helping people find homes in neighborhoods like Alger Heights where you know they are going to now live on the legacy of those whom made it a neighborhood.

If there are other neighborhoods you would like more information about let me know and we will do some research to let everyone know what makes your neighborhood a great place to live in Grand Rapids.

Alger Heights a Great Place Live and Raise a Family!

I grew up in Alger Heights, which is on the southeast side of Grand Rapids.

In Alger Heights there is a wonderful mix of homes. You have one and a half story starter homes to the larger 2 story home with plenty of room.

I think I liked Alger Heights so much as a child because I felt safe there. Also, there were always plenty of friends my age and my parents always knew all our neighbors. It still is that way still today even though I have moved away from there but wish to move back some day soon.

Friends of mine say they love to take walks through the Alger Heights neighborhood. They tell me it’s like days gone by where you still are able to get to know your neighbors and know that you can always ask them for a cup of milk to finish what you’re baking that evening.
